In addition to guarding their own gold, there are nations that have also been repositories of this precious metal from other countries.
These are the countries with the largest reserves of gold. Portugal is on the list.
The central banks and finance ministries currently have more than 33000 tons of gold valued at today's prices at about 1.4 billion dollars. While the United States (USA) lead the table with the possession of most of the gold, more than 8100 tons, there are other less obvious countries.
In addition to guarding their own gold, there are nations that have also been repositories of this precious metal from other countries. In recent years, nations such as Holland, Germany, Austria and Belgium have begun to repatriate their sovereignty over gold. One of the reasons is the change in monetary policy of some central banks, as is the case with the U.S. Federal reserve.
Many of these nations are among the richest countries in the world. MSN Money analyzed the data from the World Gold Council and released a list of the 20 countries that control the world's gold compiled by the 24/7 Wall St.
Portugal ranked in a 12th place with gold reserves (in euros) in the 4th quarter of 2018 of 14.03 billion, gold reserves in tonnes: 383 GDP of 257,050,000,000 euros, considering a population of 10.3 million people.
